The Entlebucher Mountain Dog (pronounced ENT-leh-boo-cur) is the smallest of the four Swiss Mountain Dog breeds, originally bred for herding cattle in the Alps. Origin: The Entlebucher Mountain Dog, also known as the Entlebucher Sennenhund, originates from the Entlebuch region in the canton of Lucerne, Switzerland. It is one of the four breeds of Swiss Mountain Dogs, which include the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Appenzeller Sennenhund. The breed's ancestors are believed to be Molossus dogs, large mastiff-type dogs introduced by the Romans over 2,000 years ago.
Development: Historically, Entlebucher Mountain Dogs were used to herd cattle and protect livestock in the Swiss Alps. They were valued for their agility, intelligence, and endurance, which allowed them to navigate steep mountain paths and manage dairy herds effectively. The breed was not recognized as distinct until the early 20th century, with the first breed standard established in 1908.
