Description

The Danish-Swedish Farmdog is a versatile, cheerful, and lively working breed from Denmark and Sweden, historically used for farm duties, vermin control, and companionship. Small but tough, these dogs are quick, athletic, and clever, making them excellent for agility and obedience. Their short coat is low-maintenance but sheds moderately, especially seasonally. They are highly trainable and do best with positive reinforcement and mental stimulation. With medium to high energy, they need daily walks, play, and training games, but are also happy to relax with their people.

History

Origins: The breed's history dates back to at least the 1700s, with its ancestors found across Denmark, Sweden, and even parts of Germany and France. While its exact origins remain uncertain, skeletons resembling the breed have been found in Viking burial sites. It was commonly found on small farms throughout Scandinavia.
Decline and Revival: During the industrialization of Denmark in the late 19th century, small farms declined, leading to a significant drop in the Farmdog population. By the 1980s, the breed was near extinction. Efforts by the Danish Kennel Club (DKK) and Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) successfully revived the breed through careful breeding programs. In 1987, it was officially recognized in Denmark and Sweden.
Modern Recognition: The breed was shown at the World Dog Show in 1989 and gained recognition from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) on a provisional basis in 2008. In January 2025, it was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
Today, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog is cherished as both a working dog and a family companion. It excels in dog sports such as agility and obedience due to its intelligence and energy. While still rare outside Scandinavia, its adaptability and affectionate nature have made it increasingly popular worldwide.
