History

  • Origins: The GLP’s ancestry includes long-coated hunting dogs from the Middle Ages, such as hawk dogs, grouse dogs, and water dogs. These early dogs were combined with the Medieval Wachtelhund and other long-haired breeds to create the foundation for modern German pointing breeds.
  • Development: By the 19th century, German hunters sought a versatile and elegant longhaired gundog. In 1879, the best examples of these dogs were exhibited in Hannover, where they received formal breed recognition. The breed standard was written shortly thereafter and remains largely unchanged today.
  • Refinement: To improve speed and hunting ability, breeders crossed GLPs with English Setters and Pointers during the 19th century. This helped refine their pointing instincts while maintaining their versatility as all-around utility dogs.
  • Recognition: The breed was officially recognized in Germany in 1879. Internationally, it has been recognized by organizations such as the United Kennel Club (2006) and included in the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service since 2010.
  • Today, German Longhaired Pointers remain popular among hunters for their adaptability and work ethic. They are also valued as family companions due to their gentle temperament. However, they require an active lifestyle to prevent boredom and behavioral issues.
