The Pomeranian is a tiny but bold and lively breed, known for its fluffy double coat and confident personality. Originally bred from larger sled dogs, they have high energy levels for their size and love to be the center of attention. Their long-haired, double coat sheds heavily year-round, with seasonal coat blowouts, requiring regular brushing. While intelligent, they can be stubborn, so consistent training and socialization are important. Despite their small size, they are alert and protective, making them excellent watchdogs.
Pomeranians descend from large sled dogs and were bred down in size in the Pomerania region of Germany and Poland. Queen Victoria popularized the breed in the 19th century, leading to its smaller, companion-sized form seen today.
