The Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) is a highly intelligent and energetic herding breed, originally bred for working on farms. They are loyal, affectionate, and excel in obedience and agility training. Their long-haired double coat sheds heavily year-round, with seasonal coat blowouts, requiring regular grooming. While easy to train, Shelties can be shy around strangers, making early socialization important. Their high energy levels mean they thrive in active households and enjoy mental challenges and agility exercises.
The breed descends from small herding dogs of the Shetland Islands, where they were used to herd sheep and protect farms. Over time, they were refined into the modern Sheltie, known for their intelligence and loyalty.
