The Shikoku is a rare and rugged Japanese hunting breed, developed to track and pursue game like boar in mountainous regions. Often described as a “more reserved cousin of the Shiba Inu,” the Shikoku is loyal, agile, and driven, with a strong sense of territory and a naturally alert demeanor.
Its short, double-layer coat is highly functional, offering protection in rough terrain, but it sheds heavily, especially in spring and fall. While trainable and intelligent, the Shikoku is naturally independent and wary of strangers, making early socialization and consistent, firm training essential.
