The Three Official Labrador Retriever Colors

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes three official colors for Labrador Retrievers. But don’t let the limited number fool you. There’s a surprising amount of variety within each shade.

1. Yellow Labrador Retriever

Yellow Labs can range from pale cream to deep fox red. Some are almost white, while others look like they’ve been dipped in honey. These sunny pups are known for their friendly and playful nature (though, let’s be honest, all Labs are playful).

Famous Yellow Lab: Marley from Marley & Me—a legend of mischief and mayhem.

2. Black Labrador Retriever

Sleek, classic, and full of charm. Black Labs are known for their shiny coats and big, soulful eyes. They’ve historically been favored for hunting and fieldwork, but they’re just as happy snuggling on the couch.

Fun Fact: Black was once the most common Lab color because early breeders favored them for working roles.

3. Chocolate Labrador Retriever

Rich, warm, and sweet. Just like their name. Chocolate Labs come in shades ranging from light cocoa to deep, dark chocolate. They’re often the goofballs of the Lab family (in the best way possible, of course).

Silly Chocolate Lab Trait: They seem to have an extra dose of clown energy. Zoomies are their specialty.

The “Unofficial” Labrador Retriever Colors

Beyond the standard trio, there are some less official but equally gorgeous shades. While these colors aren’t recognized by the AKC, they still have plenty of fans.

Fox Red Labrador Retriever

A deeper shade of yellow, fox red Labs are striking with their rich, rusty coats. They tend to stand out in a sea of traditional yellow Labs, making them a favorite for those who love a little uniqueness.

White Labrador Retriever

White Labs are actually very pale yellow Labs. Their almost snow-white coats give them a regal look, making them extra photogenic. (Seriously, Instagram gold)

Silver Labrador Retriever

The most controversial of the bunch. Silver Labs are actually diluted chocolate Labs. Their unique grayish-blue coats make them a head-turner, but some breeders debate their legitimacy as a true Lab color. Either way, they’re stunning.

Silver Lab Reality: Some people adore their rare look, while others question their genetics. Either way, they’re just as loving as any other Lab.

Does Color Affect Personality?

Nope! No matter the color, Labs are sweet, goofy, energetic, and loving. While some people swear chocolate Labs are crazier or black Labs are better hunters, these differences are usually based on training and individual temperament, not coat color.

Which Labrador Color is Right for You?

Picking a Lab color is really just a matter of personal preference—because let’s be honest, they’re ALL adorable. Whether you want a classic black, a golden yellow, or a unique silver, one thing’s for sure: a Lab will fill your life with love, laughter, and probably a whole lot of shedding.
