The Basset Hound is a laid-back, affectionate breed, originally bred for scent tracking in hunting. Known for their long ears, droopy eyes, and exceptional sense of smell, they are friendly and gentle companions. Their short-haired coat is easy to maintain but sheds moderately to heavily year-round, requiring regular brushing. Training can be challenging, as Bassets are intelligent but stubborn, so patience and positive reinforcement are essential. Their energy levels are low to medium, meaning they enjoy relaxed walks but don’t require excessive exercise.
The Basset Hound is an ancient breed originating from France, with its history dating back to the 6th century. The breed is believed to have descended from the St. Hubert Hound, a Bloodhound-like dog developed by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of St. Hubert in the Ardennes region of Belgium.
