The Bouvier des Flandres is a strong, loyal, and intelligent working dog originally bred in Belgium for herding cattle, pulling carts, and guarding farms. Known for their dense, tousled, weather-resistant coat, they shed very little, but their coat requires frequent brushing and trimming to prevent mats. They are protective and confident, making them excellent watchdogs, yet also calm and affectionate with their family. Training is typically easy, thanks to their intelligence and willingness to work, but they thrive under experienced handlers who provide structure and purpose. They need daily physical and mental activity to stay content.
The Bouvier des Flandres is a large, powerful herding breed originating from the Flanders region in Belgium. Its history dates back to the early 20th century, with roots tied to local farm dogs and imported breeds like Scottish Deerhounds and Irish Wolfhounds.
