Description

The Dogo Argentino is a powerful, athletic breed developed in Argentina for big-game hunting, particularly for wild boar and puma. They are known for being loyal, courageous, and protective, making them excellent guard dogs and devoted companions. Their short, smooth coat is easy to maintain and sheds moderately year-round. While highly intelligent, they require early socialization, firm but fair training, and strong leadership to channel their energy and strength appropriately. With their high energy level, Dogos need daily physical activity, including structured walks, play, and working tasks to stay balanced and content.

History

  • Origins: The breed originated in Córdoba, Argentina, in 1928. Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez began with the Cordoba Fighting Dog, a now-extinct breed known for its strength and tenacity but also its aggression. He methodically crossbred it with several other breeds, including the Great Dane, Boxer, Bull Terrier, Pointer, Irish Wolfhound, Pyrenean Mastiff, and Spanish Mastiff. His goal was to retain the Cordoba Fighting Dog's bravery while introducing stability, size, and hunting instinct.
  • Development: After years of selective breeding and refinement, Dr. Martinez achieved his vision: a dog with strength, endurance, courage, and a stable temperament. The Dogo Argentino was designed to hunt in packs across vast terrains and withstand harsh weather conditions while engaging ferocious prey.
  • Recognition: The breed was first recognized by the Federación Cinológica Argentina (FCA) in 1964 and later by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1973 as Argentina's first official breed. It gained American Kennel Club (AKC) recognition in 2020.
  • Today, the Dogo Argentino is used for hunting big game as well as search-and-rescue missions, police work, and guarding property. Despite its imposing appearance and working heritage, it can make a loving family companion for experienced owners who provide proper training and exercise.
