History

Origin: The Hanoverian Scenthound, also known as the Hanoverian Hound or Hannoverscher Schweisshund, originated in Germany during the Middle Ages. It descends from the Liam Hounds, large bloodhounds used for tracking wounded game. The breed was refined in the 17th century by the Hanoverian Hunting Estate to specialize in tracking cloven-hoofed animals.
Development: The breed was developed for its exceptional scenting ability and calm temperament, making it ideal for hunting and tracking. In 1879, breed standards were established, and in 1894, the Hirschmann Association was formed to preserve its working qualities. Crossbreeding with Tyrolean Hounds later led to the creation of the Bavarian Mountain Hound.
Global Spread: While primarily popular in Germany, the Hanoverian Scenthound has remained rare outside Europe. It was introduced to France in the 1980s and recognized by international kennel clubs like the United Kennel Club in 1996.
