History

Origin: The Miniature American Shepherd (MAS) was developed in California during the late 1960s by breeding smaller Australian Shepherds. The foundation dogs were smaller-than-standard Aussies, often under 18 inches tall, bred to maintain their compact size while preserving the intelligence, agility, and herding ability of the larger Australian Shepherd. Early breeders like Sandy Travis and Doris Cordova played key roles in establishing these smaller lines, which became popular among ranchers and equestrians who valued a smaller, portable herding dog that could also be a companion.
Development: Initially known as the Miniature Australian Shepherd, the breed was registered with the National Stock Dog Registry in 1980 and gained popularity through various rare breed clubs. The Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of the USA (MASCUSA) was formed in 1990 to promote the breed. Due to naming conflicts with the Australian Shepherd, the breed was renamed the Miniature American Shepherd in 2011 when it entered the American Kennel Club (AKC) Foundation Stock Service. The breed standard was refined to emphasize a small, versatile herding dog with strong working instincts, suitable for both stock work and family life.
Recognition: The Miniature American Shepherd was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2015 as its 186th breed and placed in the Herding Group. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) also recognizes the breed. The AKC designated the Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA (MASCUSA) as the official parent club. The breed is distinct from the Australian Shepherd, with a smaller size range (typically 13–18 inches tall) and a unique identity, though it shares much of the Australian Shepherd’s heritage and working ability.
