Description

The Pointer, often referred to as the English Pointer, is a high-performance sporting dog bred for one purpose: to locate and "point" game birds in the field with stunning precision. These dogs are known for their athleticism, endurance, and natural hunting instincts, as well as their gentle and devoted personality at home.

Their short coat is low-maintenance but sheds moderately, especially in spring and fall. Pointers are high-energy and thrive in active households or with sporting lifestyles. They’re highly trainable, responsive, and love having a job or purpose, whether in the field or through agility and obedience work.

History

  • Origin: The Pointer, also known as the English Pointer, originated in England in the early 18th century. Its ancestry is widely believed to trace back to the Old Spanish Pointer, which was brought to England by British soldiers returning from the War of Spanish Succession in 1713. These Spanish Pointers were crossed with local English breeds to refine their hunting abilities. Other continental breeds, such as Portuguese Pointers, Italian Braccos, and French pointers, may also have contributed to the development of the breed. Early Pointers were used to locate hares for Greyhounds and, after the advent of firearms, became indispensable for locating and pointing game birds for hunters.
  • Development: Once in England, the Spanish Pointers were found to be too heavy and slow for the fast-paced hunting favored by British sportsmen. To improve speed, agility, and scenting ability, breeders crossed them with Greyhounds, Bloodhounds, English Foxhounds, and Setters. This selective breeding produced a lighter, faster, and more athletic dog with a keen nose and the characteristic "pointing" stance. The breed’s primary purpose became to locate and freeze in place—"pointing"—when it detected game, signaling hunters to the prey’s location. The Pointer’s breed standard was formally adopted in 1936 and has remained largely unchanged since.
  • Recognition: The Pointer gained popularity in England and later in America, where it was introduced around the time of the Civil War. It is recognized by major kennel clubs worldwide, including the American Kennel Club (AKC) and The Kennel Club (UK), and is considered one of the finest gundog breeds. The breed is often referred to as the "Cadillac of Bird Dogs" due to its elegance and effectiveness in the field. In the United States, the term "Pointer" often specifically refers to this breed, particularly in the South.
  • Today, the Pointer is celebrated as an athletic, energetic, and even-tempered companion, excelling in hunting, field trials, and as a family pet. It is known for its stamina, speed, and intense drive to find birds, as well as for being affectionate and dignified at home. Pointers require ample exercise and mental stimulation, thriving in active households. Their loyal, playful nature makes them excellent companions for children and adults alike, while their protective instincts ensure they are attentive watchdogs. The breed’s hallmark remains its ability to "point" game, making it a favorite among hunters and sporting dog enthusiasts worldwide.
