The Shih Tzu is a small, affectionate companion breed, originally bred for royalty in China. Known for their luxurious long-haired coat, they shed very little, making them a good option for allergy sufferers, but require regular grooming to prevent matting. They have a laid-back and friendly temperament, making them great family pets, but they can be stubborn during training, so patience and positive reinforcement are key. Their energy levels are low to moderate, and they adapt well to both apartments and larger homes.
The breed originated in Tibet and was refined in China, where it became a favorite among Chinese royalty. Bred as a companion dog, the Shih Tzu remained a treasured pet before gaining worldwide popularity in the 20th century.
