The Australian Shepherd is a high-energy, intelligent working dog, originally bred for herding livestock but now popular as a family companion and service dog. Their long-haired, double coat requires regular grooming due to heavy shedding, particularly during seasonal coat blowouts. Aussies are quick learners and excel in obedience, agility, and herding tasks, but their high energy and need for mental stimulation mean they thrive in active households.
Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd was developed entirely in the United States, primarily in the Western states during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The breed's origins are tied to Basque shepherds who brought their herding dogs to the U.S. to manage large flocks of sheep.
