The Chesapeake Bay Retriever (Chessie) is a strong, intelligent, and hardworking breed, originally bred for retrieving waterfowl in cold, rough waters. They have a short, curly-haired, water-resistant coat that sheds heavily year-round, especially during seasonal coat changes, requiring regular brushing. While highly intelligent, they can be independent and strong-willed, making training moderately challenging—they need firm, consistent leadership. Their protective nature makes them loyal family dogs, but early socialization is key. They have high energy levels, needing plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever's history dates back to the early 19th century in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland and Virginia. The breed originated from two St. John's water dogs, Sailor and Canton, rescued from a shipwreck in 1807. These dogs were bred with local breeds, such as spaniels and hounds, to create a robust retriever capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the bay.
