The Estrela Mountain Dog is a majestic and powerful livestock guardian breed from the Estrela Mountains of Portugal. History

Origin: The Estrela Mountain Dog, also known as the Cão da Serra da Estrela, is an ancient breed from the Estrela Mountains in central Portugal. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, but it is considered one of the oldest breeds in the Iberian Peninsula. Some theories suggest that its ancestors may have been Mastiff-type dogs brought by the Romans to the region.
Development: Developed by local farmers, the Estrela Mountain Dog was refined as a livestock guardian, protecting sheep and goats from predators like wolves. Its isolation in the mountains helped maintain its genetic purity. The breed's first written standards were developed in the early 20th century, with the official breed standard established in 1933.
Global Spread: Historically confined to Portugal, the Estrela Mountain Dog began spreading globally in the late 20th century. It was introduced to the UK in 1972 and the U.S. in the early 1970s, with the first papered dog imported to the U.S. in 1998.
