The breed's name, "Boerboel," translates to "farmer's dog" in Afrikaans, reflecting its role as a guardian and protector of farms and families.

Origins: The Boerboel's ancestry includes mastiff-type dogs brought by European settlers, such as the Bullenbeisser (bull biter), which was introduced by Jan van Riebeeck in 1652.
