Description

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a rare and ancient Italian breed originally used for water retrieving and more famously known today as a world-class truffle hunter. They are affectionate, highly trainable, and intelligent, making them excellent companions and working dogs.

Their dense, curly coat is low-shedding and hypoallergenic, but it requires routine grooming and trimming to prevent matting. Lagottos thrive on mental stimulation, consistent training, and daily activity, enjoying everything from fetch and scent work to agility and hiking.

They’re also great family dogs, being naturally friendly and loyal, though early socialization helps ensure they grow into well-adjusted adults.

History

  • Origin: The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient Italian breed originating from the marshlands and lagoons of the Delta del Po, specifically in the Romagna region. Its history dates back to Etruscan times (7th century BCE), where similar small water dogs were depicted in artifacts. The breed's name, "Lagotto Romagnolo," translates to "lake dog from Romagna," reflecting its original purpose as a water retriever in the marshes and wetlands of northeastern Italy.
  • Development: Historically, the Lagotto Romagnolo served as a gun dog, retrieving game from the marshes for hunters. With the drainage of wetlands in the 19th and 20th centuries, the breed's role shifted to truffle hunting, leveraging its keen sense of smell and intelligence. Despite its long history, the Lagotto did not gain widespread recognition until the late 20th century. In the 1970s, a group of enthusiasts, including Quintino Toschi and others, worked to establish the breed as a recognized standard.
  • Recognition: The Lagotto Romagnolo was provisionally recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1995 and received full recognition in 2005. The breed is now recognized by major kennel clubs worldwide, including the American Kennel Club (AKC), which lists it in the Sporting Group. The breed's popularity has grown internationally, with significant interest in countries like the United States, Great Britain, and Finland.
  • Today, the Lagotto Romagnolo is cherished for its versatility as both a working dog and a family companion. Its dense, curly coat and keen sense of smell make it an excellent truffle hunter, while its friendly and outgoing nature suits it well as a family pet. The breed requires regular exercise and mental stimulation to thrive. Despite its rarity, the Lagotto Romagnolo is gaining popularity globally for its unique history and charming personality.
